John Russell BA JD

John has devoted his entire legal career to advising, training, and representing Employers in the complete range of Workplace Safety & Insurance Law matters, with emphasis on Claims Management, Return-to-Work, and Appeals before the WSIB and WSIAT.

He has been Certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Workplace Safety & Insurance Law since 1997, and is recognized as a "Leading Practitioner" in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.

A native Montrealer, John attended Loyola prior to moving to Toronto, where he graduated cum laude from the University of Toronto with a degree in Philosophy.  He earned his Law degree at Osgoode Hall, and articled with a personal injury and medical malpractice firm in Toronto, where he helped launch a constitutional challenge to the then-Workers' Compensation Act.

John was called to the Bar in 1986, and has served as an instructor in the Bar Admission Course on Workers' Compensation Law.

He has devoted his entire legal career to protecting the interests of the complete spectrum of Employers - from local companies and institutional employers, to multinational corporations - in matters involving the WSIB and the WSIAT.

John was Employer counsel in the test case on the impact of the then-newly proclaimed Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act on the claim file access provisions in Ontario's Workers' Compensation legislation.  He was successful in his arguments, thereby ensuring that Employers would continue to have access to workers' claim file documentation, irrespective of the provisions of FIPPA.

John sits as an Employer-side nominee on labour arbitration panels, is a regular speaker at conferences, a frequent contributor to Human Resources and industry publications, and an active member of the County of Carleton Law Association, the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, the Ottawa Construction Association, other industry and trade associations, and the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi.
